Gluten free does not mean wheat free

I ate gluten free corn tortillas for dinner two nights ago. It's not something I usually eat. I haven't had any for years, but it said GF in big letters on the front of the package. About an hour later, I was doubled over in pain. I looked at the label on the tortillas, and it was GF, but not wheat free. I was like, how does that happen???!! So, I Googled it, and companies often take the gluten out of the wheat, and put the wheat back into the food, I read here. I am super allergic to gluten AND wheat.

Ok, BIG lesson finally learned. This is the second or third time I've made this mistake, and each time it makes me so ill I can't function for days and days. I'm still not well, but I am sitting up this morning and typing, which is better than yesterday. I guess this is the stuff one writes about when blogging more, documenting more, which was my New Year's resolution. I'm going back to eating whole foods and fresh fruit. No more GF foods for me. I better not be writing about this subject again this year. Arrgh.

  1. It's TERRIBLE that this happened to you, but WONDERFUL that you used it to inform others! I'm glad you wrote about it here, letting your challenge help others. WOW! I, too, hope you won't have to write about it or go through it again. Peace and all good things for you at the blog and in life.

    Sincerely,
    Diane
