oh, my heart went a flittering when i saw this abstract katie…yayyy! for me it’s so hard to make changes sometimes…like it’s taking away time from your other artwork to learn new and different…but then bingo…it’s just an added dimension for whats to come!!!
just LOVE your entire post baby! and listened to lana, and am going over to amazon…i don’t know what the critics are saying as you mentioned, bleck on them, i LOVE HER VOICE! the video was so cool to boot! thanks for new music!

The page looks all mysterious I like it. Abstracts are harder than they look aren’t they?
The portrait looks cool. I want 70′s weather too! But I can’t complain, it’s been in the late 60 here at noon.
Oh the video… she has a nice voice! And at some moments she looks like Natalie Portman.

Every morning, they come in my studio to visit me..together, like that. It’s so cute. Sweet Pea must wait patiently for him to get up and come downstairs, and then she pounces on him..and won’t let him go to work. lol

The heart paintings are nice. I hope you feel better soon. The video was really weird, but actually without all that hair, her beautiful face just glowed. She has the perfect face for very short hair. Besides, keeping all those locks clean must have been a chore.

hey you…thank you for all your words…you can copy me any day my friend. i would even send the parts to you but we’re out. it was an old copper serrated pipe, smashed then welded and sealed so it will remain that color. as time goes on i’ll send anything i can, we’ll talk, ssh, i am at school with my kids in the computer lab :))..om gosh mistie’s class is unbelievable…soooooooo much. haven’t had time to do any of it yet…just read and watched some. hope you are feeling good gooder or better! xo

Hey Katie, that’s awesome, ’cause a girl can’t see to paint without decent glasses. I remember my first pair, about 15 years ago costing me $400.00 and soon after another $350. Then I learned about a Chinese guy in a rough part of town and got a fair price. You learn the hard way. My sister-in-law went blind in one eye a few years ago due to MS, she is brilliant and upbeat and you would never know that she can only see in one eye. Glad to see that you’ve sold another painting and have finished another series, you are amazing. Happy New Year. jan

You’re much too kind. lol If you could have seen the paintings that got the paint brush of death last week. I think I ended up with about 12 paintings that I had to scrap. sigh. But, it’s fine because now I have a fresh start, and that’s better than having a pile of unfinished paintings, right?

It is hard to play. I wasn’t quite ready yet, either because it takes a lot to loosen up, and not make every paint stroke so painful. lol But, you can do it!! Let me know if you want to do a trade. Get some cardboard, and make me a playful piece of art, and I’ll send you one in return. LMK if you wanna. :)

I haven’t measured her, but when she stands up, she’s almost to my waist now. I’m 5′ 3″, if that helps any. lol

It’s so cute. She stands up all the time, and begs for food like a dog..sooo funny. If I don’t give her something, she climbs up my shirt, and that hurts..so I usually have to give her something. Very demanding little girl!! lol She is going to be sooo fat in a couple months. oh, my!

I think I’m on the mend, yeah. Still a bit wobbly, but I’m trying to get back to my old self again. I hope I’m able to paint this week. It feels like it’s been forever. sheesh!

i love these shots katie girl, the shadows, the lolling “feel”. and i am so glad you are getting better. i have so much to yak with you in an e mail, when i get around to it…i have been lolling as well, not sick at all but the season seems to bring wanted and UNwanted feelings, heh heh.
annnnnd…mom was born and raised in atlanta kansas…i asked dad about stuff over the holiday…he said, the town of Burden was right by there where they lived. he said this old man only knew it to be “burden”…can it be…right there where you are now…omg…he said the only other thing he could remember that might help is there was a crazy old indian realative in the town, but doesn’t know if he’s alive still????? i can probably get more info if this is right under your nose…and imagine that!!! xoxo p.s. my grandfather’s name was George Wesley Provost…

Great post! I’ve been following your blog for several weeks and I love how you share so freely. It’s really an inspiration. I hate that inner critic and wish someone would tell us how to turn it off! It’s good to know we’re not alone in experiencing this. My critic gets on my case when I start a new painting before I’ve finished an older one, or for “cheating” by using image transfer and not drawing or painting everything, like I used to do. In spite of the critic, I’m trying to let my heart lead me these days, and do what I love, wherever that road takes me and not judge it…too much.

Yes, I have a critic like that too ;) She still gets on my nerves every now and then but I shut her up by telling her I am not one type of artist but one person inspired by many things….and then I give myself permission to create in whatever way inspires me at the moment…..I think it is part of being a creative soul to create in many ways with many subjects and materials. Maybe we should introduce our critics and they can go off somewhere else together ! :)

I forgot to mention it can be used for texture. I usually like a smooth surface for portraits, but it can be used in other ways, also.

Wow! Great idea!! Don’t know why I haven’t thought of this. I love light molding paste if I want to add texture. Who knew you could sand it down to make a nice smooth surface?! I buy those sanding blocks all day long at Home Depot or Lowes. Just thought I’d let you know. Wonderful paintings BTW! Thanks for sharing! :)

Aw! Love this story, Cookie. I had an old man, too..named Russ. He kept coming into the restaurant where I worked. Didn’t like him at first, I really gave him the cold shoulder for some reason. But when I gave him a chance, we became really good friends. I used to go out to dinner with him all the time. He was a perfect gentleman. He just wanted a friend, so he didn’t have to dine alone, y’know?

One Christmas eve, he showed up at my door, rang the bell, and then sprinted to his car..as fast as a 70+ person can go. I’ll never forget it. It was snowing like crazy, and I was wondering why he was out in that weather. I lived up on a mountain..it wasn’t easy to drive up there in the winter. Outside the door, he had left me a card with a hundred dollar bill inside. I was so poor at the time, I cried for hours. Sooo very sweet. I still get tears when I think of it. I was really sad when I read he died a few years ago. He was a good man.

I’ve been a fan of your work for a long time. It doesn’t look like you’re in a rut but you do sound tired. You definitely have been producing a lot of work. No wonder you are exhausted! When I feel stymied I listen to a lot of music, read poetry, do things that spark my imagination. These will usually get the juices flowing again. :-)

I think your paintings are very interesting. It doesn’t look at all like you’re in rut, but I do know the feeling. As others have said, breaks are good. Walking is what I do to clear my mind. It always amazes me how many of life’s problems I’m able to solve while out on my walks. Or maybe just do some doodling, or journal work that has no pressure to be a finished work. Sometimes I just have to leave a piece for days or even weeks and then when I least expect it, an idea will come. Anyway, good luck! I look forward to seeing more of your work!!

Thanks! The background happened on that one kinda by accident. I didn’t really plan it. I painted it in over time..not all at once. But, once I had done it, I stood back, and really liked it, too.

My studio could use sprucing up. I think I might tidy it up before I start painting today. It might put me in a better state of mind, and make me less tired.

I clean, too! I don’t know what it is about cleaning, but it does make my head start swirling with ideas. I usually do that if I’m stuck on what to paint next. The problem with pausing when I’m right in the middle of paintings..I don’t go back to them. I’ll end up painting over all these that I’ve got going. I have to paint it when the energy is there. And, it’s so frustrating when the energy disappears in the middle of paintings. That’s why I’m trying to keep going on these…little by little. I can take a break when I’m finished..I just had bad timing, and should have taken a break before I started. I knew I was getting burnt out. sigh.

Thanks! I share WIPs all the time. Well, I did, anyway. My site crashed, and I lost three years of work. So I’m just starting over again..trying to build it back up. I’m not sure if you’ll find more WIPs if you look back or not.

I also share when it doesn’t work out, and I paint over them..which I might end up doing with some of these. I’m not happy with anything I paint lately. It’s quite frustrating, but I know it’s just a phase, and I’ll be back to my normal self soon. I hope. lol

When I’m in a rut, usually I clean my studio. Too much clutter seems to cause my art muscles to cramp up.

I like the diagonal light and dark background on the painting on the left, it really gives it a sense of drama.

When I feel the way you feel, I take a full day or more and tell myself that I am not allowed to paint or create. I give myself time away without guilt. During the break I try to get out into nature as much as possible AND I plan something indulgent for myself. I live near the ocean, so it usually involves heading down there very early in the morning or very late. It’s peaceful then. I just watch the birds. I observe, just to watch and nothing more. The indulgent part is something like a pedicure or a few hours mindlessly shopping for something without a plan or goal. Hope this helps.

I’m visiting from PPF, so glad I stumbled upon you, love your work!

I find that learning a new technique, researching a particular element of painting and looking at other artists work gets me motivated and inspired to paint. The key is to challenge yourself all the time and work on improving your skills. I’m a big fan of the quotes “If you change nothing, nothing will change” and “If you keep doing the same thing you will get the same result” This keeps me aiming higher and wanting to pick up the paint brush.

I think we all get slumps and find ourselves in ruts…. for me I go lie in the sun or the bath… and get in and clean. Yes I know that isn’t entirely normal but I find cleaning and de cluttering means I can come at things fresh again… and considering that I ignore and neglect so much when I am busy painting I sort of figure it is the universe putting my life back into balance… good luck xx

Very Expressive, I love the direction. It looks like you have a lot to say, and using the reference that these have been “banging on the bars to get out” says a lot.

Stepping away from our comfort zone can be very challenging, and scary.
I’m always proud of an artist when I see that they are able to listen to what is being said inside, and not what is being said on the outside.

I think that your art is so very beautiful! Your use of color, your shading…it all comes together in a very soft and lovely way…

Thanks for asking, Corinne. I would like to teach some day, but I don’t feel ready yet. I’ve only been painting for 2.5 years, so I need a little more practice before I venture out into the teaching world.

I know what I’m doing when I paint, but I don’t know how to put that into words in order to teach someone else..yet. I have been thinking about it, tho, and when I’m ready I will teach some classes, yes.

A painting of a grandma is one of the sweetest topic i’ve seen in painting. Even though you didn’t exactly painted what is on the picture, you still did a great job on putting her emotions on your artwork. Very nice post. I’m sure she’ll be very proud of you.

Awesome painting strategy…I love it. Especially the wet sponge to really keep things moist! I hate to waste paint too so I barely pour any paint out when I am working but that has it’s drawbacks, like if you are mixing a custom color, it’s hard to get that same color back! yeah..this really stinks. i’ve spent a week trying to get old entries from google reader. i only went back to the end of june. idk how much patience i have for this.

i have a new host now. they back up my site every HOUR!! this better not happen again.
